Opposition protests as NA passes six bills amid quorum row

2 min read

The Speaker of the National Assembly proceeded with the legislative business during the sitting of the House despite repeated objections from the opposition over incomplete quorum.

During the session, opposition member Iqbal Afridi continuously raised the issue of lack of quorum. However, the Speaker stated that quorum had already been pointed out once and the count had been completed. The Chair avoided allowing Iqbal Afridi to indicate quorum again on the microphone.

Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam (JUI) also opposed the legislation during the proceedings. At the time, only 66 members were present in the House, whereas the required quorum stands at 86 members.

Protesting against the continuation of proceedings without complete quorum, Iqbal Afridi staged a walkout from the House.

Despite the situation, six bills were passed within eight minutes during the legislative process without full quorum. The approved bills included the Naya Pakistan Housing and Development Authority (Amendment) Bill 2026, the Federal Capital Islamabad Senior Citizens (Amendment) Bill 2025, the Pakistan Citizenship (Amendment) Bill 2025, the Hemp Control and Regulatory Authority (Amendment) Bill, the Emblems and Names (Prevention of Improper Use) Pakistan Bill 2026, and the National Archives of Pakistan (Amendment) Bill 2026. All the bills were presented by the Federal Minister for Parliamentary Affairs.
