Pakistan’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Asim Iftikhar, has emphasized that if water agreements are not secure, no international treaty can be considered safe.
Speaking at a UN Security Council meeting under the ARIA formula, Iftikhar cited the Indus Waters Treaty (Sinthan/Tasman reference) as a cautionary example. He said that the unilateral suspension of water-sharing agreements sets a dangerous precedent.
“The suspension of the Indus Waters Treaty tests the entire system of international agreements. Unilateral actions can also weaken border and trade treaties,” he stated.
Iftikhar further warned that politicizing such agreements undermines global trust. He stressed that the Indus Waters Treaty is not merely a bilateral issue but a matter of global significance, and adherence to it is crucial for maintaining international credibility.
