Shanghai, one of China’s major economic hubs, welcomed a record 9.36 million inbound visitors in 2025, marking a nearly 40 percent year-on-year increase, local authorities reported on Thursday.
The Shanghai Municipal Administration of Culture and Tourism said the city attracted 7.14 million foreign tourists last year, posting an almost 50 percent rise compared to 2024, setting a new high in annual foreign arrivals.
South Korea remained the top source of international visitors, sending approximately 909,000 tourists to Shanghai, a growth of over 103 percent year on year.
Other countries showing significant increases included Thailand, Indonesia, Russia, and Italy, each recording more than 50 percent growth in tourist arrivals, aided in part by China’s visa facilitation policies.
To support the growing number of visitors, Shanghai implemented 20 measures, including enhanced information services and improved transportation facilities, aimed at ensuring smooth travel for tourists.
