Electricity consumers may face an increase of 48 paisa per unit for one month, as the Central Power Purchasing Agency (CPPA) has filed a request with the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (Nepra) seeking approval for a monthly fuel price adjustment.

According to sources, Nepra is scheduled to hear the CPPA’s petition on January 29 and will decide after reviewing the submitted data.

In its application, the CPPA stated that 8.487 billion units of electricity were generated in December, while 8.208 billion units were supplied to distribution companies (DISCOs) during the same period. The agency said the average cost of electricity generation in December stood at Rs9.62 per unit.

The petition also detailed the sources of electricity generation during the month. Hydel power accounted for 18.07 percent of total generation. Electricity produced from local coal stood at 13.99 percent, while imported coal contributed 10.13 percent.

According to CPPA, 11.20 percent of electricity was generated from natural gas, while imported gas accounted for 17.24 percent. Nuclear energy contributed the largest share, producing 25.05 percent of total electricity during December.

Nepra will announce its decision after the hearing, which will determine whether the proposed increase is passed on to consumers.
