UN Special Envoy Hans Grundberg met with Chief Negotiator Mohammed Abdulsalam of the Houthi military group in Muscat, Oman, a UN spokesperson said.

According to foreign media, one of the key topics of discussion was the fate of 73 UN personnel still arbitrarily detained by the Houthis in Yemen, some since 2021, UN Secretary-General spokesperson Stephane Dujarric said during a briefing.

Grundberg called for the immediate and unconditional release of all detained personnel, emphasizing the importance of respecting the safety of both national and international UN staff.

“We continue to demand the immediate and unconditional release of all other personnel from international and local non-governmental organizations, civil society, and those who have served with diplomatic missions,” Dujarric added.

The special envoy also discussed with the Houthi representative pathways to advance political dialogue and reaffirmed the UN’s commitment to engaging all parties to support a return to an inclusive political process.

During his visit, Grundberg met with senior Omani officials to review recent developments in Yemen and the broader regional context.
