UN to continue work despite U.S. decision to withdraw, Spokesperson says

The United Nations has not received official notification regarding the U.S. decision to withdraw from 31 UN entities, a UN spokesperson confirmed.

Stephane Dujarric, spokesperson for UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, told in a daily briefing, “No, and I checked especially with our legal department … and there’s been no official communication,” when asked about the U.S. decision.

The announcement follows a presidential memorandum signed by U.S. President Donald Trump on Wednesday, directing the United States to pull out of 66 international organizations, including 31 UN entities and 35 non-UN entities. The White House described the move as targeting organizations that “no longer serve American interests.”

In response, the UN chief expressed regret over the U.S. decision. The spokesperson read a statement noting that contributions to the UN regular and peacekeeping budgets are legal obligations under the UN Charter for all member states, including the United States.

The statement emphasized that all UN entities will continue implementing their mandates as determined by member states. “The United Nations has a responsibility to deliver for those who depend on us. We will continue to carry out our mandates with determination,” it added.
