EU orders social media platform X to retain AI Chatbot data until 2026

The European Commission has ordered social media platform X to retain all internal documents and data related to its built-in artificial intelligence chatbot Grok until the end of 2026, a commission spokesperson said on Thursday.

The bloc’s tech spokesperson, Thomas Regnier, told reporters that Grok’s generation of antisemitic content and sexual imagery involving children is “illegal and unacceptable,” adding that it runs counter to Europe’s values and fundamental rights.

Regnier said the retention order extends earlier measures taken against X, including an order sent last year concerning the platform’s algorithms and recommender systems and their role in the dissemination of illegal content.

He added that the Commission has received X’s reply to its request for information and is currently assessing it.
Regnier said the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA) contains clear provisions for online platforms, adding that compliance with EU law is “an obligation, not an option.”

The Commission fined the social media platform X 120 million euros (about 141 million U.S. dollars) in December 2025 in its first non-compliance decision under the DSA. Recently, instances have been reported in which Grok generated images of women and minors in minimal clothing in response to user prompts.
