Counsel for the PTI founder, Faisal Malik, on Tuesday demanded that his client be produced before the anti-terrorism court in connection with the May 9 cases, saying that the former prime minister is on bail in those cases despite being held in Adiala Jail in other matters.
Speaking to the media outside the anti-terrorism court, Faisal Malik said that even if an accused has been convicted in another case, he is produced before the court in pending cases. He said the defence had requested the court to ensure the PTI founder’s appearance and to expedite proceedings in the May 9 cases.
He expressed concern over what he described as repeated denial of access to his client. “It is unfortunate that we are not being allowed to meet our client. There is no precedent anywhere in the world where a lawyer is prevented from meeting his client,” he said, adding that a relevant order of the Islamabad High Court’s Lahore bench regarding meetings already exists.
Faisal Malik alleged that jail authorities were repeatedly committing contempt of court by not allowing meetings with the PTI founder. He said the defence had requested the court either to grant access to their client in jail or to order his production before the court to ensure effective legal representation.
