The Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Fazl (JUI-F) has called for the immediate appointment of opposition leaders in both the National Assembly and the Senate, while also offering its services to help resolve the matter.

Speaking to the media at the Parliament House on Saturday, JUI-F senior leader and Secretary General Maulana Abdul Ghafoor Haideri said the party was demanding the prompt appointment of opposition leaders in the two houses of parliament. He stressed that if the Constitution was to be upheld, parliament must also function strictly in accordance with constitutional provisions.

Haideri said that an opposition leader should be appointed in the National Assembly in place of Omar Ayub. He added that if opposition parties were to unanimously nominate JUI-F chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman as opposition leader, the proposal could be considered.

He recalled that Maulana Fazlur Rehman had previously served as opposition leader and that his performance in the role was well known. “If there is consensus among opposition parties, the matter can move forward,” he said.

Commenting on recent political developments, Haideri said it appeared that Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) had placed its support behind Mahmood Khan Achakzai. He remarked that Achakzai “changes his stance daily, hoping to become opposition leader”.

However, Haideri maintained that no final decision had yet been made regarding the appointment of Mahmood Khan Achakzai as opposition leader, adding that the issue remained unresolved.
