The Peshawar Institute of Cardiology (PIC) emerged as the leading heart hospital in Pakistan in 2025, performing more than 2,500 cardiac surgeries in a single year, including 316 open-heart surgeries on children.

According to PIC spokesperson Riffat Anjum, the hospital’s outpatient department (OPD) examined 127,748 heart patients during the year, including 22,563 children. In total, 19,583 patients underwent angiography and angioplasty procedures, while 1,222 children had congenital heart defects repaired using device closures.

The hospital’s emergency department received 23,101 cardiac patients over the year. Under the provincial health card program, PIC provided free treatment—including angiography, angioplasty, surgeries, and other procedures—to 28,115 patients.

PIC also introduced advanced cardiac procedures in the province, including 37 transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI) surgeries and three mitral clip procedures performed without open-chest surgery. The hospital extended its services to patients from other provinces as well as Afghanistan, treating approximately 1,200 Afghan patients in the OPD and performing angiography, angioplasty, and cardiac surgeries for more than 200 patients from the neighboring country.

Highlighting its surgical excellence, PIC set a national record by performing 14 TAVI surgeries in a single day in 2025, earning recognition for Pakistan on the global stage.
