Iran’s Foreign Ministry on Tuesday designated the Royal Canadian Navy a “terrorist organization” in response to Canada’s decision to label Iran’s Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC) as a “terrorist entity.”
In a statement, the ministry said Ottawa’s “illegal” decision in June 2024 to blacklist the IRGC, which it described as “one of the pillars of Iran’s official armed forces,” was in “contradiction with the fundamental international law principles.”
Citing the principle of reciprocity and acting under a 2019 law, Iran said it “identifies and announces the Royal Canadian Navy as a terrorist organization,” according to the statement.
On June 19, 2024, Canada listed the IRGC as a “terrorist entity” under the Criminal Code, describing the move as a response to what it called the IRGC’s terrorist acts carried out independently and in association with designated groups such as Hezbollah and Hamas.
