The match ended on the second day after England defeated Australia by four wickets, leading to ticket refunds for over 90,000 fans that had planned to attend the third day. Many had also purchased tickets for the fourth day. Refunds will be processed automatically for ticket holders.
The Boxing Day Test had set high expectations for attendance revenue, with more than 90,000 spectators anticipated on day three. The early finish echoes the Perth Test, which concluded in two days and resulted in a $4 million loss for the host board.
Despite the early exit, the Melbourne Test broke attendance records, with 94,199 spectators on the first day and 92,045 on the second day, highlighting strong fan interest despite financial setbacks for Cricket Australia.
