The Sindh government has written to the federal authorities seeking assistance in apprehending extortionists operating from abroad, following an increase in complaints from builders and traders in Karachi.
Chief Minister Sindh, Syed Murad Ali Shah, said that extortionists will not be allowed to evade the law, and the federal government has been contacted to coordinate actions against those based overseas.
Separately, SSP Special Investigation Unit (SIU) Dr. Imran stated that daily operations against local extortionists are ongoing. So far this year, over 50 extortionists have been arrested, with nearly 170 complaints registered.
Dr. Imran reported that a suspect was killed in a recent encounter on Friday morning. Data recovered from his mobile phone included phone numbers of several traders and records of extortion demands.
He also noted that the representative body of builders, Abad, had mentioned 10 cases of extortion. Of these, only three FIRs had been filed previously, five were never reported, and two were brought to the authorities’ attention recently, prompting immediate action.
