The Special Judge Central, Arjumand Shah sentenced former Prime Minister Imran Khan and his wife Bushra Bibi to 17 years in prison each in the Toshakhana-II corruption case on Saturday. The sentencing was announced at Adiala Jail in the presence of both accused.
According to the written judgment, the prosecution successfully proved its case, finding the couple guilty of misappropriating state assets. Imran Khan was sentenced to 10 years under Section 409 of the Pakistan Penal Code and 7 years under the Anti-Corruption Act. Bushra Bibi received an identical 17-year sentence. Both were also fined Rs16,425,650 each, with an additional six months imprisonment for non-payment of the fines.
The court considered Imran Khan’s age and Bushra Bibi’s gender in delivering what it described as the minimum sentence, including time already spent in custody. Both were taken into FIA custody and returned to Adiala Jail for enforcement of court orders.
The case originated from a Saudi Arabia official visit, during which the couple received a Bvlgari jewelry set that was legally required to be deposited in the Toshakhana. Investigations found that the couple undervalued the jewelry in bad faith, causing a loss of Rs32.851 million to the national treasury.
FIA Anti-Corruption Circle Islamabad emphasized that this is the first case in FIA’s history in which a former Prime Minister and spouse were convicted solely on documentary evidence. The agency commended the investigative team for its successful handling of the case.
