The Islamabad High Court has declared the appointment of Justice Tariq Mahmood Jahangiri illegal and ordered his removal from office, citing issues with his educational qualifications at the time of his appointment.
A two-judge bench, comprising Chief Justice Sardar Sarfaraz Dogar and Justice Azam Khan, held that Justice Jahangiri did not possess a valid LLB degree when he was appointed to the Islamabad High Court, making him ineligible to serve as a judge.
The court directed the Ministry of Law to formally de-notify Tariq Jahangiri as a judge of the Islamabad High Court. It also disposed of all related miscellaneous petitions pending before the court.
Justice Jahangiri reportedly left the Islamabad High Court shortly before the verdict was announced.
The decision follows proceedings in the degree controversy case, during which arguments were presented by several lawyers, including Mian Dawood Advocate, Barrister Salahuddin, Akram Sheikh, and Raja Aleem Abbasi. The court reviewed multiple petitions challenging Justice Jahangiri’s appointment before issuing the ruling.
The Islamabad High Court emphasized that a judge must meet all constitutional and legal qualifications at the time of appointment, and failure to do so renders the appointment null and void.
