Two people, including a police constable, were martyred after unknown assailants opened fire on a polio vaccination team in the Tangi area of Salarzai tehsil in Bajaur district, officials said.
According to reports, the attackers targeted the polio campaign team during vaccination activities. A police constable, identified as Sajjad, who was deployed on security duty, and a civilian lost their lives in the attack.
District Police Officer Waqas Rafiq said that a heavy police contingent had been dispatched to the area following the incident. He added that raids were under way to arrest those responsible and that strict security arrangements had been put in place during the ongoing anti-polio campaign.
Prime Minister strongly condemned the terrorist attack and directed authorities to ensure that the perpetrators were brought to justice at the earliest.
The prime minister said that targeting those performing the vital national duty of polio eradication was deeply tragic and unacceptable. He reaffirmed the government’s commitment to continue the polio eradication drive with full resolve until the disease is completely eliminated from the country.
