2 min read

The Punjab government has approved the province’s first surface water treatment plant for Lahore under the vision of Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif, officials said on Friday.

The project, to be constructed along the BRB Canal, was approved during the 52nd meeting of the Provincial Development Working Party. It will be implemented with financial support from the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank.

According to officials, the plant will have the capacity to treat 54 million gallons of surface water per day, making it safe for domestic use. The project is expected to benefit residents of Mughalpura, Baghbanpura, Fatahgarh and Shadipura, along with more than 1.7 million people across Lahore.

The surface water treatment plant will be built on 120 acres of land and is scheduled for completion by 2031. The project also includes the installation of a 5-megawatt solar energy system to support power generation for plant operations.

Secretary Housing Noor-ul-Amin Mengal said the project is part of a broader initiative launched on the directions of Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif to address water contamination and improve access to clean drinking water. He added that the project would soon be submitted to the Executive Committee of the National Economic Council for final approval.

Officials said similar efforts are under way across Punjab to convert polluted water into safe, usable resources.
