World observes Human Rights Day, Pakistan calls for equality and justice

Countries across the globe marked Human Rights Day on Wednesday, with Pakistan using the occasion to stress dignity, equality and justice for all citizens. The day is observed every year on 10 December, commemorating the adoption of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) by the United Nations General Assembly in 1948.

The declaration remains one of the most translated documents in the world with versions available in about 375 languages and dialects. It laid down 30 core articles that define fundamental human rights and freedoms meant for every person without discrimination.

While the day is meant to promote awareness and action, human rights experts say powerful nations often apply different standards. Global criticism continues over violations in occupied Kashmir and Palestine, where residents face restrictions, violence and severe humanitarian pressure. Rights groups note that abuses in these conflict zones rarely receive adequate international accountability.

In his statement President Asif Ali Zardari reiterated that protecting human dignity and ensuring equality and justice remain central duties of the state. He noted that Islam upholds respect, fairness and the value of every human being, while Pakistan’s Constitution guarantees fundamental rights without discrimination.

Zardari said Pakistan’s founding principles envisioned by Quaid-e-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah emphasised harmony, tolerance and respect among citizens. He added that the government is committed to advancing and safeguarding human rights nationwide.

The president also highlighted the need for stronger measures to protect vulnerable and marginalised communities, including women, children, minorities and persons with disabilities. Empowering these groups, he said, is the state’s responsibility.

He called for greater cooperation among civil society, state institutions and international partners to strengthen respect, tolerance and collective dignity in society. The president praised the United Nations for promoting global awareness through the annual observance of Human Rights Day.

Zardari urged citizens to uphold the values of justice and humanity in their daily lives. “Every Pakistani deserves a life free from fear, coercion and discrimination,” he said, expressing hope that national efforts for the protection of weaker segments of society succeed.
