Punjab Govt approves basant festival, sets safety rules

1 min read

The Punjab government has allowed the celebration of Basant, the traditional kite-flying festival, after 25 years of restrictions. The festival will be observed on February 6, 7, and 8, 2026, according to government sources.

Officials said that while the festival is permitted, strict rules will be enforced. Special QR codes will be issued for kites and threads, and activities like firing guns or engaging in street fights will not be allowed.

The festival’s return comes under a new ordinance, which sets specific conditions. Children under 18 are not allowed to fly kites, and parents or guardians will be held responsible for any violations. Only kites with cotton thread will be permitted. The use of metallic or sharp-edged threads is strictly banned, with penalties including 3 to 5 years in prison and fines up to 20 lakh rupees.

Authorities also emphasized that motorcycles within districts must follow designated safety guidelines during the celebrations.

The Basant festival, banned in 2001 due to safety concerns, returns with a focus on tradition while prioritizing public safety.
