Bollywood icon Dharmendra, one of Hindi cinema’s most celebrated actors, passed away on Sunday at the age of 89 after a prolonged illness, Indian media reported.

According to reports, Dharmendra was admitted to Breach Candy Hospital in Mumbai due to breathing difficulties. He had been hospitalized just two weeks ago for similar issues, which led to false rumors of his death that his family strongly denied.

Born Dharam Singh Deol in Ludhiana, Punjab, Dharmendra made his film debut in 1960 with Dil Bhi Tera Hum Bhi Tere. Over a career spanning six decades, he starred in iconic films such as Sholay, Yaadon Ki Baaraat, Mera Gaon Mera Desh, and Phool Aur Patthar, earning a permanent place in Bollywood history. In 2012, he was honored with the Padma Bhushan, one of India’s highest civilian awards.

Dharmendra was married twice, first to Prakash Kaur at age 19 and later to actress Hema Malini. Despite his advancing age, he remained active on social media, frequently sharing videos on farming, healthy living, and positive thinking.

His final film, 21st, is scheduled for release on December 25. Bollywood colleagues and fans across the globe have begun paying tribute to the actor, remembering his unmatched contribution to Indian cinema and his charismatic presence both on and off-screen.
