Mike Hesson defends out-of-form Babar, predicts strong comeback

2 min read

Pakistan head coach Mike Hesson has expressed full confidence in Babar Azam, backing the star batter to return to form and convert his starts into substantial scores in the upcoming series against Sri Lanka.

Speaking to media, Hesson said Babar remains technically sound despite a lean run in the recent home ODI series against South Africa, where he managed just 45 runs in three innings, averaging 15 with a strike rate of 78.94.

Hesson noted that Babar is timing the ball well, playing with the right intent, and that the dip in scores is only temporary.

The head coach praised Babar’s approach and shot selection during the South Africa series, asserting that his positive mindset and ability to handle pressure were encouraging signs. He said Babar is very close to a big score and that his ability to find gaps and absorb pressure, particularly after early wickets, was impressive. Hesson added that Babar should stay focused on his batting rhythm and decision-making rather than worrying about converting every start into a big total.

He also pointed to situational challenges in the series, including a low-bouncing delivery that dismissed Babar in the first ODI and an unfortunate run-out in the third.

Pakistan recently made history by winning their first-ever home ODI series against South Africa. Babar is expected to play a key role as Pakistan now prepare for a three-match ODI series against Sri Lanka, beginning November 11 at the Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium.
