The International Cricket Council (ICC) has announced plans to expand the Women’s Cricket World Cup, aiming to build on the success of the recently concluded edition.
According to ICC, starting from the 2029 tournament, the Women’s World Cup will feature 10 teams, up from the eight teams that participated between 2000 and 2025. The expanded format will include 48 matches, providing more opportunities for emerging cricketing nations to compete on the global stage.
The ICC had initially announced its intention to expand women’s cricket during International Women’s Day in 2021, and the decision was officially confirmed yesterday.
Additionally, the Women’s T20 World Cup, scheduled for next year, will also be expanded to 12 teams, up from 10 teams in the previous edition.
The move reflects the ICC’s broader commitment to growing women’s cricket worldwide, giving more players and nations the chance to participate in high-profile tournaments.
