The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Parliamentary Party in the Senate has rejected the draft of the proposed 27th Constitutional Amendment, terming it “suspicious” and alleging that the government is attempting to push it through without due parliamentary process.
A meeting of the PTI’s Senate Parliamentary Party, chaired by Parliamentary Leader Senator Ali Zafar, was attended by Senators Allama Nasir Abbas, Noorul Haq Qadri, Falak Naz, Dr. Humayun Mohmand and others. The session focused on formulating a strategy for the upcoming Senate sitting.
PTI senators decided to protest in the upper house over what they described as the deliberate delay in listing the cases of the party’s founder and his spouse in higher courts.
According to a statement issued after the meeting, the party accused the ruling Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) and their allies of “stage-managed political tactics”, claiming that legislation was being bulldozed in violation of constitutional and ethical norms.
The statement added that the opposition was being sidelined, undermining parliamentary principles. The party warned that the proposed amendment would adversely impact basic human rights and expressed concern over what it called attempts to curtail the powers and independence of the judiciary.
The PTI Parliamentary Party also expressed strong displeasure over the delay in notifying Allama Nasir Abbas as Leader of the Opposition in the Senate, urging that the notification be issued without further delay.
The party has assigned its senators the task of reaching out to independent members to build support against the 27th Amendment.
