The three-day celebrations of Guru Nanak’s 556th birth anniversary have officially commenced in Nankana Sahib, the birthplace of the founder of Sikhism, amid a large influx of pilgrims from around the world.

Tens of thousands of Sikh devotees have gathered in the historic city, where more than 30,000 visitors from various countries including a significant number from India are expected to participate in religious ceremonies and pay homage at sacred sites such as Gurdwara Janam Asthan, Gurdwara Panja Sahib and Gurdwara Darbar Sahib Kartarpur.

Pakistani authorities, including the Evacuee Trust Property Board, have completed all arrangements related to security, transportation, accommodation and food to ensure a smooth and spiritually enriching experience for the pilgrims.

More than 2,100 visas have been issued by the Pakistan High Commission in India, facilitating the entry of Indian Sikh pilgrims. This marks the first major relaxation of travel restrictions since recent tensions between the two neighbouring countries. The pilgrims arrived via the Wagah border, while others travelled aboard special trains from Sindh and different regions, receiving a warm welcome from local officials and the district administration.

The main religious ceremony in honour of Guru Nanak will take place at Gurdwara Janam Asthan on Wednesday, November 5. The celebrations are expected to underscore Pakistan’s efforts to promote interfaith harmony and cultural exchange, echoing the universal message of peace, love and brotherhood.

Pakistan has also showcased its hospitality by decorating Nankana Sahib and releasing a Punjabi film titled Chal Mele Na Chale to attract visitors and celebrate Sikh heritage. The festivities stand not only as a religious occasion but also as a significant platform for fostering communal harmony and strengthening cultural
ties across borders.
