The Asian Development Bank (ADB) has drawn up a comprehensive agenda aimed at protecting Pakistan’s water resources, agriculture and energy security in the face of climate change.
According to ADB, under the newly shaped “Glaciers to Farms Programme,” a detailed report will be prepared to assess the economic and environmental impacts of glacier melt.
The programme will also include a climate-smart planning approach to help protect Pakistan’s water reservoirs, agricultural output and energy systems.
ADB stated that recommendations from global experts on glacier melt have already been sought. These proposals will be reviewed at the International Convention of the East Asian Economic Association, scheduled to take place from 8–9 November in the Philippines.
Sources said the programme is expected to serve as a key policy framework for Pakistan to ensure efficient water usage, promote modern irrigation systems, and mitigate climate-related risks.
