Punjab govt plans 1,000 groundwater recharge wells in Lahore

The Punjab government has drawn up a major plan to construct 1,000 Groundwater Recharge Wells across Lahore to help restore and maintain the city’s rapidly depleting groundwater levels.

According to media reports, the initiative aims to introduce large-scale modern solutions to replenish underground water. Secretary Housing Punjab Noor-ul-Amin Mengal visited the Liberty Chowk Groundwater Recharge Well site, where WASA Managing Director Ghufran Ahmed briefed him on the project.

Officials said that each recharge well has the capacity to refill 8,000 gallons of water per day, with three wells already functional in Lahore. A total of 15 sites have initially been identified in the city for the installation of recharge wells.

Mengal said that, as per the directives of the Chief Minister of Punjab, a modern engineering-based solution is being rolled out to tackle water scarcity. He added that the Parks and Horticulture Authority (PHA) Lahore will allocate space in all parks for the construction of recharge wells.

Emphasising environmental protection, Mengal instructed that existing trees must be preserved during construction. He further stated that key decisions have been taken to counter environmental pollution, and that WASA Punjab will establish groundwater recharge points across the province.

“Water is a blessing and must not be wasted,” he said, adding that all departments will ensure the project is executed with seriousness and urgency.
