Renowned Pakistani singer and musician Faisal Kapadia, who remained part of the iconic band Strings for three decades, has revealed that veteran Bollywood actor Dimple Kapadia is related to him as his niece.
Kapadia made the revelation during a recent interview with an international media outlet, where he reflected on his music journey, early beginnings and cross-border family ties.
Recalling when he first discovered his passion for singing, Kapadia said he performed for the first time in 1980 on renowned Pakistani music composer Sohail Rana’s children’s programme “Saare Dost Hamare”, when he was around 9 or 10 years old.
During the conversation, Kapadia shared that Dimple Kapadia’s late father, Chunnibhai Kapadia, had visited Karachi in 1984 to attend a cousin’s wedding in their family.
He added that he had performed a song at that wedding, after which Chunnibhai appreciated his talent and promised to help him sing in Bollywood one day. “He told me, ‘I will make sure you sing in Bollywood,’ but he passed away soon after, and it never happened,” Faisal said.
Kapadia later built his own path into Indian cinema through music. “I eventually sang for Bollywood. My first Bollywood song was Yeh Hai Meri Kahani and then Spider,” he said, referring to his playback work.
Faisal Kapadia co-founded Strings in 1988, becoming one of South Asia’s most influential pop-rock voices before the band disbanded in 2021.
