The Air Cargo Control Unit (ACCU) of the Customs Collectorate at Karachi airport has foiled an attempt to smuggle narcotics through international mail by seizing 2.19 kilograms of marijuana concealed inside tin cans imported from Thailand.

According to Pakistan Customs sources, the parcel, falsely declared and labelled as “Thai Red Tea”, was intercepted during routine profiling and screening of incoming consignments. The seized marijuana carries an estimated value of Rs 67.5 million in the international market.

Officials said the interception reflects the growing trend of using cross-border courier and e-commerce channels for narcotics smuggling. “The surge in global e-commerce has significantly increased cross-border movement of goods, making mail and courier services a preferred route for smuggling attempts,” an ACCU official noted.

Pakistan Customs stated that strict surveillance measures are being enforced at airports, cargo terminals, and mail centres to curb the trafficking of contraband. The Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining vigilant checks on all forms of narcotics smuggling, including through international mail and courier networks.

Further investigation has been initiated to trace the intended recipients and the smuggling network behind the parcel, officials added.
