The Green Climate Fund (GCF) has approved $250 million in financial assistance for Pakistan to support climate-resilient water and agriculture systems, the Asian Development Bank (ADB) announced on Tuesday.
According to the ADB statement, the funding will be utilised for the “Glaciers to Farms” project, which aims to protect and enhance glacier-fed water systems threatened by climate change. The programme will focus on reducing environmental risks to water channels originating from melting glaciers.
The initiative is set to benefit farming communities in Swat, where the project will introduce improved irrigation and agricultural facilities to help farmers adapt to the growing impact of climate-driven water shortages. The ADB will support Pakistan in executing and overseeing the project.
The approval comes as Pakistan continues to face severe climate vulnerabilities, particularly in regions dependent on glacier-based water supplies — a concern amplified by global warming and changing weather patterns.
