The Karachi Traffic Police has released statistics showing that since the launch of its e-challan system, over Rs 12.5 million in fines were imposed within just six hours. According to the police, a total of 2,662 violations were recorded during that period.
Details show that of the total incidents: 419 were for overspeeding; 3 were for failing to drive within the lane; 4 were for stop-line violations; 1,535 for failure to use seat belts; 166 for crossing red lights; and 507 for riding a motorcycle without a helmet.
Additional figures indicate 4 fines for wrong-way driving on one-way streets; 7 for dark (tinted) windows; 5 for illegal parking; 32 for mobile phone use while driving; 3 for wrong direction; 5 for no-parking zone violations; and 3 for wrong side driving.
The traffic police described the e-challan system as an important milestone for effective monitoring, and said it “will ensure compliance with traffic laws among citizens”. They called on the public to adhere to rules and cooperate, noting that public support will help make the system more effective.
