Under the Punjab government’s Safe Jail Project, a security survey for installing surveillance cameras and modern monitoring equipment in central jails across the province has been completed.
According to jail authorities, the project’s first phase will see the installation of around 5,500 cameras in 11 central jails. Each prison will be fitted with approximately 500 cameras, including 15 to 20 facial recognition-enabled units.
In addition, new security systems such as panic buttons, wireless communication (walkie-talkie) systems, body-worn cameras, body scanners, and automatic alarm devices will be deployed.
Officials said the installation process is scheduled to be completed by January. In the second phase, an additional 7,000 cameras will be installed in remaining jails across Punjab to expand monitoring and enhance security resilience.
The Rs 5 billion project is planned for completion within the current financial year. The National Radio and Telecommunication Corporation (NRTC) has been awarded the contract for installation, while the Punjab Safe Cities Authority will provide technical support.
The initiative is aimed at preventing jailbreaks, improving internal monitoring, and ensuring better oversight of inmates and staff.
