Federal Minister for Energy Sardar Awais Ahmad Khan Leghari has announced a major reduction in electricity tariffs for the industrial and agricultural sectors, aimed at stimulating economic activity and supporting national productivity.
In a video message, the minister revealed that Pakistan currently has a surplus of 7,000 megawatts of electricity. The government, he said, has decided to channel this additional power to the country’s industrial and agricultural sectors — the “backbone of the national economy.”
Leghari explained that the cost of additional electricity units for industries and agriculture has been significantly reduced. The tariff for additional units in the agricultural sector has been cut from Rs. 38 to Rs. 22.98 per unit, while for the industrial sector, the rate has been brought down from Rs. 34 to Rs. 22.98 per unit.
“This measure will help reduce the average cost of electricity for consumers,” he said, adding that industries and farmers will now be able to use more electricity at lower rates.
Giving examples, the minister stated that agricultural users consuming an additional 100 units will see an average reduction of Rs. 7 per unit in their power cost, while industrial users consuming an additional 1,000 units will benefit from an average reduction of around Rs. 5 per unit.
Leghari said that the industrial sector had already experienced some price cuts earlier, and the latest reduction will further boost industrial growth.
“We are fulfilling the promises made to the public,” he added, expressing confidence that the move would help strengthen the economy and enhance productivity across key sectors.
