Afghanistan’s star leg-spinner Rashid Khan delivered a stunning performance against Bangladesh on Saturday, taking five wickets in the second One-Day International and equaling a record long held by former Pakistan greats Wasim Akram and Saqlain Mushtaq.
Rashid’s latest five-wicket haul marked the sixth time in his ODI career that he has taken five or more wickets in an innings, the same number achieved by swing legend Wasim Akram and off-spinner Saqlain Mushtaq during their illustrious careers for Pakistan.
The elite list of bowlers with six five-wicket hauls in ODIs also includes Mohammed Shami (India), Trent Boult (New Zealand), and Lance Klusener (South Africa).
The world record for the most five-wicket hauls in One-Day Internationals remains with Pakistan’s Waqar Younis, who achieved the feat 13 times. He is followed by Sri Lankan spin wizard Muttiah Muralitharan, who did it 10 times, while Mitchell Starc, Brett Lee, and Shahid Afridi share the third spot with nine five-wicket hauls each.
Rashid’s latest performance not only propelled Afghanistan to a strong position in the series but also cemented his status among the modern era’s most impactful match-winners in limited-overs cricket.
