Sonia Mustafa, a trailblazer from Balochistan, has made history by becoming Pakistan’s first-ever female FIFA football referee, a milestone that has brought immense pride to her province and the nation.
Born and raised in Quetta, Sonia began her journey in football 25 years ago as a player. Despite facing a lack of facilities, limited opportunities, and societal challenges, she remained steadfast in her passion for the sport.
Her perseverance paid off when she successfully completed the FIFA physical fitness test in Lahore, officially earning her place as Balochistan’s first certified FIFA referee.
Sonia currently officiates boys’ and girls’ national-level matches, serving as an inspiration for young athletes especially women across Pakistan.
Speaking about her journey, Sonia said that while opportunities for women athletes in Balochistan have improved over the years, the lack of basic sports infrastructure remains a major challenge.
“The journey from being a football player to becoming a referee wasn’t easy,” she said. “But determination, courage, and persistence turned what once seemed impossible into reality.”
Her achievement marks a new chapter for women’s sports in Pakistan, highlighting how passion and resilience can overcome even the toughest odds.
