Artificial intelligence has officially made its way onto the cricket field as the International Cricket Council (ICC) introduced AI-powered pitch reports using Google Gemini during the ongoing ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup 2025.
Before the 10th match between India and South Africa, former Indian women’s cricket captain Mithali Raj surprised fans by announcing that she would be presenting the pitch report with the help of Google’s AI tool, Gemini.
Using the live feature on her phone, Mithali showed the pitch through the camera and asked Gemini for an analysis:
“We are at the ACA-VDCA Stadium in Visakhapatnam for a one-day match. The weather is hot and humid today — what do you think about this pitch?”
Gemini quickly responded, saying the surface looked batter-friendly, smooth, and without much grass. The AI added that the hot and humid weather would likely mean less swing for the bowlers, predicting a high-scoring encounter.
Mithali agreed with the assessment, noting that the pitch indeed looked good for batting and that fans could expect plenty of runs.
The innovative use of AI in live cricket coverage marks another technological leap for the ICC, blending sports analysis with next-generation digital intelligence.
