Minister of State for Finance and Railways Bilal Azhar Kayani has underscored the vital link between modern transport infrastructure and sustainable economic growth, as he addressed a high-level Ministerial Panel Discussion at the Global Rail Conference and Exhibition in Abu Dhabi.

Speaking on the theme “Building Connected Nations: The Role of Transport and Infrastructure in Sustainable Development,” Kayani said, “It goes without saying that infrastructure and economic prosperity are intertwined,” stressing that robust connectivity can unlock growth, create jobs, and strengthen regional integration. He highlighted Pakistan’s achievements in infrastructure, including the expansion of motorways that have improved provincial connectivity and freight movement across the country.

The minister outlined Pakistan’s vision to transform its railway sector into an efficient, reliable, and environmentally sustainable backbone of national transport. He placed special emphasis on the upgradation of the ML-1 and ML-3 corridors, describing them as critical projects for boosting regional trade and aligning Pakistan’s rail system with international standards.

On the sidelines of the conference, Kayani engaged with key international stakeholders to explore cooperation in rail and infrastructure development. He met with Etihad Rail CEO Shadi Malak to discuss possible collaboration in freight logistics, technological exchange, and network development. He also visited the exhibition stalls of Etihad Rail and Hafeet Rail to examine regional innovations in rail infrastructure.

The Global Rail Conference and Exhibition, held in Abu Dhabi from September 30 to October 2, 2025, brought together transport ministers, policymakers, and industry leaders from around the world to shape the future of rail and infrastructure. Pakistan’s active participation, Kayani said, reflects its commitment to advancing sustainable transport solutions and forging strategic international partnerships to support long-term economic development and connectivity.
