An Additional Sessions Court in Lahore has sentenced a man, Ghulam Muhammad, to death for the 2020 murder of mosque cleric Qari Usman.
In a written verdict, Additional Sessions Judge Riaz Ahmed also imposed a fine of Rs1 million on the convict. The case was registered by Hudyara police in 2020.
According to the prosecution, Qari Usman was leaving his home to give the Maghrib call to prayer when Ghulam Muhammad opened fire at his door, killing him instantly. Witnesses testified that the murder stemmed from a financial dispute.
Prosecutor Habib-ur-Rehman Bhatti presented witnesses and evidence, which the court found credible. The judge noted that the prosecution successfully proved its case, while the convict’s defense was based on a “fabricated story.”
The court concluded that, in light of strong evidence, Ghulam Muhammad deserved the death sentence along with the monetary penalty.
