ISLAMABAD: Ireland’s national broadcaster RTÉ has announced it will refuse to participate in the Eurovision Song Contest 2026 if Israel is allowed to compete. The decision comes in protest of the ongoing humanitarian crisis in Gaza, and echoes broader concern among European broadcasters.
According to foreign media, RTÉ described participating alongside Israel under the current conflict as “unconscionable,” citing the “appalling loss of lives in Gaza,” the targeting of journalists, restricted media access, and the plight of hostages.
The broadcaster said its final decision depends on whether Israel is permitted by the European Broadcasting Union (EBU) to join next year’s competition, which is set to be held in Vienna. Broadcasters have until mid-December to confirm their participation status.
RTÉ’s stance has raised significant tensions around the Eurovision contest, highlighting how political and ethical concerns are increasingly influencing participation decisions in international cultural events.
