KARACHI: Nepali-origin Indian actress Manisha Koirala has strongly condemned the violent crackdown on protesters in Nepal. The actress took to social media, posting in Nepali language, and expressed solidarity with demonstrators demanding justice and accountability.

In her message, Koirala shared the image of a blood-soaked shoe, symbolizing the violence on the streets. She wrote: “Today is a dark day for Nepal when the voice of the people was silenced with bullets. The anger against corruption and the demand for justice has been answered with gunfire.”

Her remarks came after police in Nepal launched a forceful operation against Generation Z-led protests that spread nationwide. Demonstrators had taken to the streets against corruption and the government’s recent controversial restrictions on social media platforms.

Local media outlets reported casualties and injuries, though exact numbers remain unclear as authorities have not yet issued an official statement. Videos circulating online show protesters clashing with security forces, while human rights groups have raised concerns over the excessive use of force.

Manisha Koirala, who was born in Kathmandu and later became one of Bollywood’s most acclaimed actresses, has often spoken about her connection to Nepal. Her latest statement has resonated widely, with thousands of comments from Nepali citizens thanking her for speaking up.

According to The Kathmandu Post and other Nepali news sources, protests began last week after a series of corruption scandals surfaced, sparking anger among young people. The government’s decision to limit access to TikTok, Instagram, and other platforms further fueled public outrage.

International observers, including rights organizations such as Amnesty International, have urged the Nepali government to respect the right to peaceful assembly and avoid disproportionate use of force.

The situation remains tense, with demonstrations continuing in several cities including Kathmandu, Pokhara, and Biratnagar.
