ISLAMABAD: The Supreme Court of Pakistan has dismissed the bail petition of Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) official Tahir Hassan, who was arrested on charges of facilitating drug smuggling.
A two-member bench comprising Justice Hassan Rizvi and Justice Shehzad Malik heard the case. During proceedings, Justice Rizvi remarked that Saudi authorities had intercepted a woman at Jeddah Airport with 35,000 narcotic pills, after which they contacted Pakistan.
“The incident caused serious embarrassment to Pakistan and the accused played a key role in facilitating the smuggling attempt,” Justice Rizvi observed.
Justice Shehzad Malik further noted that without the assistance of the FIA official the woman could not have boarded her international flight. The court was also informed that four additional criminal cases are registered against the accused.
Hassan’s counsel argued that his client was unlawfully detained by the FIA but the bench rejected the argument, stating that “concrete evidence” had been presented against the accused.
The court subsequently denied bail, keeping the FIA officer in custody as investigations continue.
