LAHORE: Director General of Punjab’s Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA), Irfan Ali Kathia, has revealed that the devastating floods have inundated nearly 4,000 villages and submerged around 1.3 million acres of agricultural land across the province.
Speaking to a private TV channel, Kathia said the situation in Gujrat remains particularly challenging due to relentless rainfall. “Unexpected downpours in Gujrat are not new in recent spells the district has seen rainfall between 300 and 400 millimeters,” he explained.
He warned that the next 24 hours will be crucial for Multan, as floodwaters continue to swell in all three major rivers. “The scale of destruction is unprecedented; we do not find such examples in the past,” he stressed.
Kathia emphasized that saving lives is the top priority, adding that any decision to breach300 embankments is taken only after detailed technical studies. He further noted that a flood peak of 1.05 million cusecs passed through Khanki, while the rising waters have also disrupted railway tracks across Punjab.
