Gilgit-Baltistan: Floods wreak havoc, search ongoing for missing tourists

2 min read

Torrential monsoon rains in Gilgit-Baltistan’s Diamer district have triggered deadly landslides and flash floods, leaving a trail of destruction across the region.

Several lives have been lost, while the search continues for at least 25 missing tourists caught in the natural disaster.

So far, more than 300 tourists have been rescued by emergency teams, despite harsh terrain, debris, and continuous rainfall hampering relief efforts. Authorities have declared several areas in Astore Valley and Thor as disaster zones due to the severity of the situation.

According to official estimates, 20 to 25 people remain unaccounted for in the mountainous region. Search and rescue operations are underway around the clock, though access to affected areas remains difficult.

Families of the missing have turned to social media to seek help. Among the missing are Ansar Majeed and Afaq from Mandi Faizabad in Nankana district. Family sources said Ansar’s vehicle was last tracked at Babusar on July 21. He was traveling with nine friends; seven have since been rescued, but two remain missing.

Other missing individuals include Sadaqat from Rawalakot and Faraz ul Hassan from Hyderabad. Faraz was accompanied by several friends—Rasheed, Saqib, Nasir, Jehanzaib, and Dr. Nauman—who are also missing. Their families have issued urgent appeals to the public and authorities for assistance in locating their loved ones.

The disaster underscores the risks posed by the ongoing monsoon season, which has already caused extensive damage to infrastructure, homes, and roads in northern Pakistan. Emergency services remain on high alert as more rainfall is expected in the coming days.
