The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) on Monday appointed former all-rounder Azhar Mahmood as the interim head coach of the men’s national red-ball team.

According to a statement issued by the PCB, Mahmood will serve in the role until the expiration of his short-term contract.

The board added that the former cricketer had previously worked as the assistant head coach of the national side, and his promotion was based on “performance, familiarity with the players, and understanding of the team’s dynamics.”

“Azhar Mahmood’s presence will be valuable given his vast international and coaching experience,” the PCB said. “His prior involvement with the team allows for continuity and will help maintain stability in the dressing room.”

Azhar, who played 21 Tests and 143 ODIs for Pakistan between 1996 and 2007, also featured in multiple coaching roles globally, including a stint as bowling coach with the national side and assignments in various T20 leagues.

Sources within the PCB said that a decision regarding the permanent red-ball head coach would be made after the conclusion of the ongoing evaluation process for long-term appointments.
