US President Donald Trump on Sunday distanced the United States from recent attacks on Iran, declaring that “the US had nothing to do with the attack on Iran tonight.”
His remarks come amid heightened tensions in the Middle East following deadly missile exchanges between Iran and Israel, which have claimed at least 15 lives and left hundreds injured across Israeli cities.
Writing on his social media platform, Truth Social, Trump warned Tehran against any direct or indirect aggression towards the United States. “If Iran attacks us in any way, shape, or form, the full strength and might of the US Armed Forces will come down on you at levels never seen before,” he said.
The president, who is widely expected to be the Republican nominee for the 2024 US presidential elections, also claimed that the bloody conflict between Israel and Iran could be resolved swiftly through negotiation. “We can easily get a deal done between Iran and Israel and end this bloody conflict!!!” he asserted.
Trump’s comments come in the wake of a significant escalation in the region, where Iranian forces launched a new wave of missile and drone attacks under “Operation True Promise III” in retaliation for earlier Israeli strikes that reportedly killed top Iranian commanders and scientists.
Iranian media claims that over 100 supersonic ballistic missiles were fired at strategic Israeli sites, including Haifa’s oil refineries and critical infrastructure, causing widespread destruction and a major power outage.
Israel, in response, admitted that its air defence system was not impenetrable. The Israeli Defence Forces (IDF) urged the public to follow safety protocols as missile sirens wailed across Haifa, Tel Aviv, and Jerusalem. So far, at least 15 people have been killed, and dozens injured in the fresh Iranian strikes.
Meanwhile, Israeli officials hinted at targeting senior Iranian leadership, including Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, in possible future responses — a move that risks dragging the region into a broader conflict.
The situation has also prompted diplomatic outreach from other regional players. Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, in a rare phone call with newly elected Iranian President Masoud Peshkian, expressed confidence that Iran would act wisely and called for joint efforts to prevent further escalation. He also warned that Israel is seeking to provoke Iran into a broader war that would compel the United States to intervene militarily.
