In a major breakthrough, police have arrested the prime suspect in the Government College University (GCU) gang rape case in Lahore.

According to the police, the suspect, Haseeb Afzal has been arrested, while raids are ongoing to apprehend his accomplices, Talha Khan and Hamza Sheikh.

Police reports indicate that the three men allegedly gang-raped an MPhil student, Fatima, after she befriended Haseeb on social media.

SP Civil Lines stated that the accused filmed the assault to blackmail her.

In her complaint to the police, Fatima disclosed that Haseeb had expressed romantic interest in her and proposed marriage. Despite her consistent refusal to engage in a physical relationship, Haseeb persisted.

On January 10, Haseeb invited her for breakfast in the Muslim Town area at 10:00 am. Upon arriving, she found Haseeb accompanied by Talha Khan and Hamza Sheikh in his car. The three men took her to a flat in Bahria Town, where they allegedly gang-raped her.

Fatima further stated that during the assault, the suspects made videos and photos of her and threatened her that if she tells anyone the videos and photos will be shared on social video.

According to Fatima, the suspects also tore off two cheques from her cheque book.

After the incident, the men abandoned her on Outfall Road and fled.

The police have registered the GCU gang rape case under sections pertaining to gang rape and are conducting raids to nab the other two suspects.
