CJP Yahya brings back Justice Munib Akhtar to Practice and Procedure Committee

2 min read

The Supreme Court on Saturday announced the reconstitution of its Practice and Procedure Committee.

A notification issued by Registrar Supreme Court Jazeela Islam confirmed the new composition, which will be led by Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Yahya Afridi.

As per the notification, Justice Mansoor Ali Shah and Justice Munib Akhtar will serve as members of the committee.

This reconstitution follows amendments made under the Supreme Court Practice and Procedure Act 2023, which grants the top judge the authority to nominate members to the committee.

The recent changes reflect a significant shift in the committee’s composition, as Justice Aminuddin Khan has replaced Justice Muneeb Akhtar. Notably, Justice Mansoor Ali Shah previously expressed dissent regarding the committee’s formation.

In a letter, he recommended that the Practice and Procedure Amendment Ordinance be addressed at a judicial level, advocating for a full court meeting to discuss the proposed changes.

Reconstitution of Supreme Judicial Council

On the other hand, CJP Afridi has been appointed as the Chairman of the Supreme Judicial Council, marking his first involvement in this pivotal body.

Alongside him, two senior judges, Justice Mansoor Ali Shah and Justice Munib Akhtar, will serve as members of the Council.

In addition to these appointments, the two most senior judges among the Chief Justices of the High Courts will also join the Supreme Judicial Council.
