PTA chairman reveals who ordered ban on ‘X’, internet shutdowns in Pakistan

Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) Chairman Major General (Rtd) Hafeezur Rehman clarified that the decision to block the social media platform “X”, formerly known as Twitter, rests solely with the federal government.

Speaking informally with journalists, he stated that “X” would be reopened once the government gives the directive. The platform has seen a high volume of complaints in Pakistan, and its case is currently under hearing in the Sindh High Court.

Addressing concerns over internet shutdowns, the Chairman highlighted that in 2023, India experienced 116 internet shutdowns, while Pakistan only saw seven instances. He emphasized that while the PTA does not support internet shutdowns, national security remains a priority.

The Chairman also noted that during Ashura, on the 10th of Muharram, mobile services were suspended in some areas, but internet services were only temporarily halted in specific regions at certain times.

Drawing comparisons, he mentioned that Bangladesh also suspended mobile services during elections, stating that every country has its own unique security challenges, and decisions are made based on intelligence reports.

He also confirmed that mobile data services are currently suspended in Panjgur due to ongoing security concerns.
