Peaceful Assembly and Public Order Act 2024 challenged in IHC

1 min read

The law banning peaceful assembly without permission in Islamabad Capital Territory (ICT) has been challenged in the Islamabad High Court (IHC).

Islamabad High Court Chief Justice Aamir Farooq heard the citizen’s request and issued a notice to the federation and the law secretary and sought response and summoned attorney general Mansoor Usman for assistance.

The petitioner argued peaceful protest is a fundamental right of every citizen, and cannot be banned. “All over the world, including Europe and the UK, assembly is subject to permission,” the IHC CJ remarked.

Violation of the law is punishable by three years of imprisonment, the petitioner’s lawyer said. “They can say that three years sentence is against fundamental rights, Chief Justice Amir Farooq.

The Islamabad High Court (IHC) adjourned the hearing for two weeks after giving notice to the parties.
