Heavy rainfalls leave 5 dead in south China county

GUANGZHOU: Torrential rains have killed five people in Jiaoling County in south China’s Guangdong Province, local authorities said on Thursday.

As of 4 p.m. Thursday, five people have been found dead and two others missing in Jiaoling due to the rains. A total of 64,947 people in the county have been affected, causing the direct economic losses of about 3.65 billion yuan (about 502.7 million U.S. dollars).

From 8 a.m. Sunday to 7 a.m. Monday, heavy rainstorms lashed Jiaoling, with the average rainfall in the county reaching 188.4 mm, causing serious disasters in seven townships.

At present, rescue and disaster relief efforts as well as the post-disaster reconstruction work are underway in the county.
