ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif chaired a meeting to review the second phase of the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) on Monday.

Federal Minister for Planning Ahsan Iqbal led the session while senior officials from the ministry of planning attended the meeting.

During the meeting, discussions focused on preparations for the PM’s upcoming visit to China and an assessment of progress on CPEC’s second phrase.

The officials discussed preparations and agenda items for the upcoming Joint Cooperation Committee (JCC) meeting scheduled for next week. They provided briefings on both ongoing and proposed projects across various ministries. The officials observed the need for active participation from all ministries and institutions to ensure the successful completion of CPEC projects.

Ahsan Iqbal discussed the progress on the Karachi–Peshawar Railway Line (ML1) project. The minister noted its potential to serve as a “milestone” for bettering communication and commercial sectors within the region.

Iqbal also talked about the importance of fostering cooperation with China beyond infrastructure projects, particularly in areas such as technology.

Iqbal talked about the shift towards business-to-business (B2B) cooperation in CPEC’s second phase. He pointed out the “strategic significance” of such partnerships following the initial government-to-government collaborations.

The minister commended China’s development model and called for Pakistan to adopt a similar “visionary approach” for its own “development trajectory”.

The meeting concluded with a collective recognition of the importance of aligning Pakistan’s development goals with a “clear vision” and “strategic planning” for national progress.
